The Lineage

Who studied under Rich Schefren, what they built afterward, and what evidence exists for each.

A claim about mentorship is only worth as much as the mentee’s willingness to confirm it. This page is organized by that standard. Names in the first section have said it themselves, on the record. Names in the second are documented relationships without a first-person quote. Names in the third are widely reported and included with that caveat attached.

Nothing here is asserted more strongly than its evidence allows.

On the record — in their own words

Russell Brunson — ClickFunnels

“Without Rich Schefren in my corner when I needed him, there would be NO ClickFunnels.”

“Rich was the first person who really explained online marketing… He gave me the courage to realize that I had a real business. You gotta go to the guru to the gurus. When you get inside kind of the inner circles, everybody knows who Rich is.”

Brunson was coached by Rich early in his career, before ClickFunnels. He later built ClickFunnels into one of the largest SaaS companies in the category, sold 450,000+ copies of his marketing books, and built an audience of two million entrepreneurs. His Hook–Story–Offer framework — the structural formula behind most of modern funnel marketing — was developed after his time with Rich, and inherits the Core Concept logic: the story is where the belief changes, and the belief is what makes the offer land.

He hosted Rich on The Russell Brunson Show (Episode 99, December 2025) and personally bought and completed ZenithMind OS.

Mike Filsaime — Groove

“Rich is more than just a ‘coach’. He’s a friend and a silent partner who stands with you — there’s nobody else at his level.”

The best-documented coaching relationship in the archive, because it came with numbers, and the numbers were published while they were happening:

“Before I met Rich, we made $15,000 a month. In May 2006, we banked $184,000 — and that was not associated with any launch of a product.”

Independently corroborated by Joel Comm on July 17, 2006 — a contemporaneous third-party account, not a retrospective. Filsaime’s business later exceeded $1 million per month.

He then built the Evergreen Business System — and effectively the StealthSeminar product category — on Rich’s Evergreen Event-Driven Marketing framework, which he called “the Holy Grail.” The automated webinar industry runs on that lineage.

Todd Brown — Marketing Funnel Automation / E5 Method

Todd was a partner at Strategic Profits, not a coaching client — an important distinction, and his own framing:

“I was a partner with Rich Schefren over at Strategic Profits. Brilliant, brilliant dude, brilliant marketer, tremendous connections. He introduced me to really most of the biggest players that I know today — Mark Ford, Clayton Makepeace, Jay Abraham.”

“The marketing advice I got from Rich Schefren over a cup of coffee in a Starbucks in Boca Raton changed my thinking, my marketing, and my business.”

Together they co-created the Founders Club and launched 15+ front-end marketing funnels. Todd went on to build Marketing Funnel Automation and became one of the foremost authorities on funnel engineering, and serves as faculty for Jeff Walker’s Product Launch Manager training. His Unique Mechanism work is a direct descendant of Core Concept thinking.

Alex Jeffreys

“Rich is way more than a coach. He’s THE coach, the guy who started it all, and the one who helped me take my business from good to great to the best in the market.”

Jim Edwards

Testimonial printed inside the original 2006 Internet Business Manifesto — making it the earliest documented endorsement in the record:

“Then I met a guy who helped me understand that I was in charge of a business… My business success didn’t just happen; Rich helped me carve out a path that I’ve followed.”

Yaro Starak — Entrepreneurs-Journey

“When I was managing BetterEdit, my proofreading company that I sold in 2007, I was knee deep learning from Rich Schefren, taking his Business Growth System course.”

“Many years ago I was exposed to Rich Schefren during the very first internet marketing launch he did. I had never heard of the guy before, but suddenly a lot of people I had heard of and respected were recommending him.”

Starak’s is the most useful outside account of how the Manifesto actually spread — peer recommendation, not advertising.

Kim Walsh Phillips — Powerful Professionals

“You’ve got to have a friend, somebody standing there with you. And that’s what Rich is — the person who’s going to sometimes tell you what you don’t want to hear.”

Jack Mize — Deadline Funnel

“Rich Schefren taught me that you can’t out-tactic bad strategy. Before I learned that lesson, I was constantly chasing the latest marketing tactic.”

Documented relationships

Named contemporaneously in dated sources as coaching clients or joint-venture partners during the 2004–2008 period, without a located first-person testimonial:

Tellman Knudson · Brad Fallon · John Carlton · Marlon Sanders · Joel Comm · Keith Baxter · Willie Crawford · Sterling Valentine · Dan Caron · Michael Cage · 1ShoppingCart

The earliest of these is on the public record: IMNewsWatch, June 27, 2006, quoting Dan Caron naming the marketers Rich was already coaching at the time the Manifesto was released.

Rich’s early private coaching group — 25 clients — increased their combined online revenue by over $40 million in 18 months, averaging over $1.5 million per member.

Former clients

Ryan Deiss (DigitalMarketer) · Frank Kern · Jeff Walker (Product Launch Formula)

All three were clients of Rich’s. Each is also named consistently across third-party bios, podcast introductions, and industry accounts as having been coached or advised by him early in their careers.

They are listed here on Rich’s own account of the working relationship rather than on a public testimonial, and this page says so plainly — the same standard applied to every other name on it.

Also named across third-party sources as having worked with Rich: Yanik Silver, Alex Mandossian.

The people who taught Rich

The lineage runs upward too, and the estate is stronger for saying so:

Jay Abraham — twenty years of mentorship and partnership; co-authored The Maven Matrix Manifesto (2008). “Rich is one of the rare individuals who actually transforms lives, business fates and financial destinies.”

Dan Kennedy — mentor and collaborator. “Rich is a bona-fide, multi-media entrepreneur, expert in streamlining business operations, managing fast and dramatic growth, and profiting from EVERY direct-response media.”

Clayton Makepeace“He’s the real McCoy: a certifiable genius when it comes to web marketing strategy.”

Mark Ford (Michael Masterson) and Bill Bonner — Agora. Bonner’s is the billion-dollar testimonial: “With one tiny innovation, Rich helped my company, Agora Publishing hit the billion dollar mark.”

Brian Kurtz“Rich Schefren is really one of the top marketers in the world.”

What the lineage actually transmitted

The specific businesses matter less than the fact that one idea propagated through all of them.

Rich’s argument in 2006 was that the industry had the wrong unit of analysis — it was optimizing tactics when the problem was architecture. The people in the first section above took that into ClickFunnels, DigitalMarketer, Groove, StealthSeminar, and the funnel-engineering discipline, and it stopped being Rich’s idea and became the water. Hook–Story–Offer, the Unique Mechanism, the lead magnet, the automated webinar, the value-first free report — all of them are downstream of the same premise, and most people using them daily have no idea where they came from.

That is the real measure of the lineage: the concepts outran the attribution.

And it is exactly the problem Rich now works on. Judgment that transfers by apprenticeship transfers slowly, incompletely, and only to whoever happens to be standing there. Capturing it directly is the thing Imprinted AI exists to do.

Apprenticeship without the decade

Frequently asked questions

Who did Rich Schefren coach? On the record in their own words: Russell Brunson, Mike Filsaime, Alex Jeffreys, Jim Edwards, Yaro Starak, Kim Walsh Phillips, Jack Mize. Ryan Deiss, Frank Kern, and Jeff Walker are former clients. Todd Brown was a business partner at Strategic Profits rather than a coaching client.

Is “Guru to the Gurus” a self-applied title? No. It was applied by third parties from the mid-2000s onward. See Guru to the Gurus.

What’s the strongest single piece of evidence? Mike Filsaime’s, because it was published with specific numbers in 2006 and independently corroborated by Joel Comm the same year — contemporaneous, not retrospective.

Did Rich Schefren start ClickFunnels or DigitalMarketer? No. He coached founders early in their careers. Brunson’s own statement is that without Rich “there would be NO ClickFunnels” — that is Brunson’s characterization of the counterfactual, not a claim of ownership or involvement in the company.
